Assemblymember Sebastian Ridley-Thomas Visits UCLA

Rid-Thom_1On Thursday, October 30, the UCLA State Government Relations unit hosted Assemblymember Sebastian Ridley-Thomas from the 54th Assembly District as part of the “Legislator to Campus” program.  UCLA happens to be a part of Assemblymember Ridley-Thomas’ district.  His day-long campus visit included meetings regarding enrollment, campus budget and finance, development, residential life, and campus architecture.

UCLA Alumni Win the Forbes Pressure Cooker Contest

Enrou, a start-up formed by a group of UCLA students who formerly worked for the UCLA Volunteer Center, won the $400,000 prize at the inaugural Forbes Pressure Cooker on October 21, 2014.  Ann Wang represented Enrou in the Pressure Cooker pitch contest.  Wang, a UCLA alum, worked in the UCLA Government & Community Relations’ Volunteer Center during all four of her undergraduate years at UCLA.  From 2010 to 2013, Wang created and executed a variety of service events.  She also contributed to the Social Media & Marketing Internship Program where undergraduate students combine their passions for technology and community service.

UCLA Launches Behavioral Health Center of Excellence

On Thursday, October 14, 2014, UCLA launched its Behavioral Health Center of Excellence at the Semel Institute.  Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg was honored for his work in the legislature toward making Behavioral Health Centers of Excellence possible.  The launch was made official when Senator Steinberg had the honor of cutting the ribbon that symbolized the center’s opening.  Recently, Senator Steinberg presented a plan to members of Congress and Vice President Joe Biden for mental health services to be implemented nationwide.  Prior to UCLA’s launch of the center, UC Davis launched its Behavioral Health Center of Excellence on October 1, 2014.

Meet the Candidates: District 3 Supervisorial Forum

In coordination with the Los Angeles Business Council and the Century City Chamber of Commerce, UCLA is hosting a candidate forum for the Los Angeles County 3rd Supervisorial District to replace outgoing representative, Zev Yaroslavsky.

Be Ready to Vote this Fall and Support #highered

In the November 2012 and May 2013 elections, there were a significant number of newly elected members of Congress, the California legislature, and in the local government. On November 4, 2014 there will be more new members elected at the local, state and federal levels. UCLA needs advocates that have strong relationships with these newly elected members. If you have not already, join Bruin Caucus, our volunteer advocacy group. UCLA and the future of higher education (#highered) depends on participants like you.

With respect to the November 4, 2014 election, it is important that you are registered to vote and that you do vote. If you are not registered, you can register to vote online. The deadline to register in the November election is October 20, 2014Make sure you are ready and encourage others to be also.

Additionally, on September 16, 2014, Government & Community Relations will be holding a candidate forum for the 3rd Supervisorial District of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.  The goal of the forum is to provide voters with more information on the candidates and the issues of the 3rd Supervisorial district. Save the date for this event, online registration will be available in the next few weeks.
