Keith S. Parker, AVC

In the November 2012 and May 2013 elections, there were a significant number of newly elected members of Congress, the California legislature, and in the local government. On November 4, 2014 there will be more new members elected at the local, state and federal levels. UCLA needs advocates that have strong relationships with these newly elected members. If you have not already, join Bruin Caucus, our volunteer advocacy group. UCLA and the future of higher education (#highered) depends on participants like you.

With respect to the November 4, 2014 election, it is important that you are registered to vote and that you do vote. If you are not registered, you can register to vote online. The deadline to register in the November election is October 20, 2014Make sure you are ready and encourage others to be also.

Additionally, on September 16, 2014, Government & Community Relations will be holding a candidate forum for the 3rd Supervisorial District of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.  The goal of the forum is to provide voters with more information on the candidates and the issues of the 3rd Supervisorial district. Bruins in the Valley, in the Districts, in the Community

Keith S. Parker, AVC

Thank you to everyone that attended the inaugural Joint Higher Education Reception that was held at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) on February 6, 2014.  It was a very successful event in partnership with CSUN, College of the Canyons, Pierce College, LA Valley College and Mission College.  The participating elected officials at the reception were: Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky; Los Angeles City Council members Bob Blumenfield, Mitchell Englander, Paul Krekorian, Felipe Fuentes, and Nury Martinez; Assembly members Adrin Nazarian, Scott Wilk, and Senator Fran Pavley.

During the spring, G&CR will be doing advocacy meetings in the district with members of congress and state legislators.  Additionally, we will be conducting a number of candidate forums at the local, state and federal levels of government for open seats.  The primary election will be held on June 3, 2014 and the general election will be held on November on November 4, 2014. Additional details on these events will be released soon.

Thank you for your support as an advocate for UCLA and public higher education.  If you have not joined Bruin Caucus, please do so.

Happy New Year Bruins!

Keith S. Parker, AVC

I hope that all of you had a very enjoyable holiday season with family and friends.  As we begin 2014, let me remind you that this is an election year for the Congress and the Legislature.  Government & Community Relations will be engaged in Advocacy efforts and needs your voice and participation.  If you have not already done so, please join Bruin Caucus.

During the first quarter of the year, we have several major advocacy events planned. On February 6, 2014, we will be partnering with Cal State Northridge, LA Valley College, Mission College and Pierce College in a joint higher education reception for San Fernando Valley Elected Officials. This event brings together the three segments of higher education to sponsor an opportunity for constituents in the San Fernando Valley to meet with their local, state and federal representatives. Save-the-date and contact Advocacy with questions .

Final thought, while I was still enjoying our win over USC in football and our impressive Sun Bowl victory on New Year’s Eve, we beat USC in men’s basketball on January 5th,  107-73.  The New Year is off to a good start.
