Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto was joined by Governor Jerry Brown, LA Mayor Eric Garcetti, and Mexican Consul General Carlos M. Sada, during his first visit to Los Angeles this week as part of his tour of California.
Hundreds of Mexican and Mexican-American leaders were on hand to welcome President Peña Nieto. Among those in attendance were UCLA Professors Patricia Gándara from the Graduate School of Education & Information Studies and Raúl Hinojosa-Ojeda from the Cesar E. In coordination with the Los Angeles Business Council and the Century City Chamber of Commerce, UCLA is hosting a candidate forum for the Los Angeles County 3rd Supervisorial District to replace outgoing representative, Zev Yaroslavsky.

George McKenna and Alex Johnson are the two final candidates vying for the LAUSD District 1 Board seat. Both George and Alex were the two top vote getters on the June 3rd primary and will now face-off in a runoff election on August 12, 2014. In the November 2012 and May 2013 elections, there were a significant number of newly elected members of Congress, the California legislature, and in the local government. On November 4, 2014 there will be more new members elected at the local, state and federal levels. UCLA needs advocates that have strong relationships with these newly elected members. If you have not already, join Bruin Caucus, our volunteer advocacy group. UCLA and the future of higher education (#highered) depends on participants like you.
With respect to the November 4, 2014 election, it is important that you are registered to vote and that you do vote. If you are not registered, you can register to vote online. The deadline to register in the November election is October 20, 2014. Make sure you are ready and encourage others to be also.
Additionally, on September 16, 2014, Government & Community Relations will be holding a candidate forum for the 3rd Supervisorial District of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. The goal of the forum is to provide voters with more information on the candidates and the issues of the 3rd Supervisorial district. Save the date for this event, online registration will be available in the next few weeks.

Dr. Ira Lesser, chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance and Professor and vice chair in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the Geffen School of Medicine, was a featured speaker on a panel of medical professionals at a State Assembly Joint Hearing on July 29. The Joint Hearing, which took place at the Southern Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles, was co-hosted by the chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Mental and Behavioral Health, Assemblymember Sebastian Ridley-Thomas, and the chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Justice Reinvestment, Reggie Jones-Sawyer, Sr. Both Assemblymembers represent districts in the greater Los Angeles area.
