UCLA Government & Community Relations is co-sponsoring with UCLA Alumni and UCLA Student Affairs the Journey to Change event honoring the 17 UCLA Alumni who participated in the 1961 “Freedom Rides” protesting segregation in public transportation. These civil rights activists rode buses in the South to test a Supreme Court ruling outlawing segregation in interstate transit.

Assemblymember Reggie Jones-Sawyer, Chair of the Legislative Black Caucus, will present a proclamation on behalf of the State Legislature. At this UCLA community event, we also will be joined by other elected officials, community leaders, alumni, students, staff, faculty and friends of the University.

In 1961, these young UCLA students, Black and White, risked their lives as they travelled through the Deep South fighting segregation. Join the entire UCLA community on February 6th for a historic evening honoring a generation of heroic Bruins whose commitment to freedom during a critical period of the Civil Rights Movement made a difference in all of our lives today.

The program will be on February 6, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. in Royce Hall.
