For more than a decade, the UCLA Office of Government and Community Relations has hosted a federal advocacy trip to Washington, DC for UCLA students, faculty, alumni, and other friends of the university. We strongly encourage you to consider joining us for UCLA Day in Washington, DC, which will take place May 16 -18, 2016. This trip is an excellent opportunity for you to engage in outreach and public service in support of UCLA.

The goal of this advocacy event is to advance the education, research, and public service missions of the university by strengthening relationships with Members of Congress and legislative staff. The UCLA delegations will target members of the California delegation, as well as UC alumni in Congress and key Congressional Committees.

The deadline to register is Wednesday, April 15, 2016. But due to limited flight and hotel options it is highly recommended that participants register ASAP.

Why UC Day in DC Matters

As Congress considers various proposals on federal spending, we must urge them to continue to provide strong support and funding for education and research. This year, we will specifically focus on the importance of federal support for financial aid at UCLA. Our UCLA delegation will include current students, administrators, and alumni. Your participation in UC Day in DC will bring a greater level of influence to all the activities because you can speak personally about the importance of federal funding for higher education.

Business attire is required at all meetings. Casual attire is appropriate for the dinners.

Delegate Travel Information

Although there is no registration fee to participate in UCLA in DC, hotel and travel arrangements are the responsibility of the delegate. UCLA pays for selected meals. The following is information to help you in making your lodging and flight arrangements.

Welcome Dinner
UCLA will host a delegate welcome dinner for all delegates on Monday, May 16th at Tortilla Coast. After you check in to the hotel, please meet in the hotel lobby at 6:00 PM to walk over to the restaurant as a group.

Delegate Briefing
A mandatory delegate briefing for all participants will be held on Tuesday, May 17th, at 9:00 AM on Capitol Hill (exact location TBA). Breakfast will not be served. Guests in the Capitol Hill Hotel may take advantage of the complimentary continental breakfast served at the hotel. If you would like to walk over with the group, please meet in the Capitol Hill Hotel main lobby at 8:30 AM.

Ground Transportation

Delegates are responsible for their own ground transportation to and from their home and Los Angeles International Airport. Due to heightened security measures, airlines suggest you arrive at least 90 minutes prior to your departure.

Please be aware of restrictions on liquids in carry-on luggage. Allowable liquids and gels transported in carry-on baggage must be in a 3-oz container or smaller and transported in a one-quart clear, plastic, zip-top bag. Otherwise, these items must be packed in checked baggage. This includes deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste and make-up.

Ground transportation to and from Dulles International Airport to the Capitol Hill Hotel will be provided for those passengers flying on the recommended flights, or an equivalent itinerary.

A transportation van will pick up advocates from Dulles International Airport at 3:00 PM. Please meet at the Super Shuttle counter located on the lower level of the Main Terminal at Door 2.

Suggested Flights

If you would like to take advantage of provided transportation from Dulles to the Capitol Hill Hotel delegates should arrive in Washington D.C. by 2:30 PM on Monday, May 16th. Delegates arranging their own transportation should arrive in Washington D.C. no later than 4:00 PM.

When departing Washington D.C. delegates should depart no earlier than 5:00 PM on Wednesday, May 18th.

Departing Monday, May 16th and returning on Wednesday, May 18th.

  • United Airlines Flight 2019 from IAD to LAX departing at 7:30 PM/arriving at 10:18 PM
